After completing his residency, he continued to work with the Veterans Administration, giving eye exams to veterans in central and southern Ohio, and caring for private-sector patients throughout the Columbus area. Dr. Suh and his family joined Medical Ministry International to treat and examine patients and perform surgeries at their medical center in Columbus, Ohio, as well as at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the U.S. Army Medical Center in Washington. D.C. After a four-year stint in ophthalmology at Ohio State University School of Medicine, they joined the medical staff of the American Academy of Ophthalmic Surgeons International, which studied and performed surgery on patients at its facilities in New York, New Jersey and California. In addition to being an assistant professor of surgery and an associate professor of surgery at OSU, Coates began his medical career as a general surgery assistant.
